(The Black Nations – We Are All Relatives)

The people say that all living things are connected by and through the power of the creator, the source of being in the teachings of the “hoop of life.”  It is said we are all relatives, related by the divine energy that surrounds and is part of all.

Native peoples adopted many  from the black nations who had escaped the oppression of the whites.  They were honored as having powerful medicine and called Buffalo People.

The message of Blue Heron Woman is Peace.  Black Elk told “the First Race, which is most important, is that which comes within the souls of the people when they realize their relationship, their oneness with the universe, and all its powers, and when they realize that at the center of the universe dwells the great spirit and that this center is really everywhere and within each of us.”  This is the peaceful knowledge of Blue Heron Woman.

The mystic Lakota warrior, Crazy Horse, had many sacred visions that showed him

“what was to become.”  In these dreams,  Crazy Horse was shown his protective

“war paint” and the medicine that would shield him in battle.

Crazy Horse saw the future of the “People” with the coming of the white man.  He

fought to save the meanings and traditions of the “old Indian way”; the way of

the pipe, the (teachings) sacred wheel of life and the living mother of “all things,

Maka Akan, mother earth “this is Indian land!”

Cottonwood leaf  -  symbolic of mother earth, the cottonwood tree is used as the

center pole in sundance to symbolize the dancer’s connection to the energy of all

living things.

“I” Transcending the Ego Mind

The transformation of consciousness has been the central message

of the great wisdom teachers in humankind’s history.  The restrictions

of the “ego mind” and its collective nature are seen in Hinduism as “Maya”, the veil of delusion, “the mind is maya.”  Transcending this

“illusion” is called “enlightenment.”  In the teachings of Jesus, it is

“salvation”; in Buddhism, it is “the end of suffering”, transcending

“self.”  In the “Old Indian Way”, this faith is shown through the teachings of the sacred wheel of life (medicine wheel) they say.

“illusion” of the mind.  Crow lives in “the void”, the stillness, and has no

restrictions of time-----seeing the past, present and future at once.  "All things are born of woman" is the sacred law of the Crow.  Crow Medicine

enjoyment and sweetness of life.  Hummingbird is said to repel negativity

wherever it creeps in and teaches us to express love more fully in our

The White Buffalo Woman was a vision brought to the Lakota. Two young warriors were out hunting and saw a white buffalo calf rolling around in the dirt. When the dust settled, there was a beautiful

young woman before them. She said, "I come to bring a gift to the people."

When they brought her to their camp she took out a bundle...she unwrapped it and there

was a pipe. She brought the sacred "pipa" to the people.

In the 1800s there was a physician who lived on the Pine Ridge Reservation, Dr. Walker. He was able to translate from the Lakota language the tales of the winter camp.  He pointed out that stories which were told correlated to the Greek spirits...the elements. He brought a new perspective to this understand8ing.
